I took this photo with @michellevelascophotography when she shared the idea that she could use a slow shutter speed to make the water look mystical.
We were laughing.
There was a group of early-twenty-somethings who had made their way around the rocks and I could hear them and they occasionally popped their heads around the corner and would give an “Oops!” face, then laugh and retreat.
I told her “We better be quick!”
I decided to try for a meditation pose and quickly discovered the rock was pointy. I did my best to balance and not fall off the rock.
She told me, “When I say ‘now’ you have to hold completely still for this to work.”
I closed my eyes. I felt that beautiful connection to light I feel when I close my eyes and connect upward. The world went still but I had awareness of my surroundings.
I felt warmth and calm but could hear the group around the rocks and sense they would return any moment.
I could “see” my own kids playing down the beach with their Dad and knew they were safe.
I could hear the water surrounding me and wondered if it would knock me off the rock as I was precariously balanced.
But the water didn’t knock me off.
The group did not enter the photo.
And in that moment it wouldn’t have mattered if those things had happened. I felt calm and held.
When I looked at the photo the next day I thought “This is the modern mystic!”
The ability to go into a calm space, in the midst of so much going on at once, and feel the simultaneous connection to source and the awareness of our surroundings.
It’s being connected to our intuition as well as being able to navigate such a high-tech, 20,000 images-a-day-in-our-face world.
It’s being able to connect to others online, through the clutter.
It’s being heard.
It’s being seen.
It’s showing up.
It’s receiving information in the midst of the chaos.
It’s having fun sitting on a rock for no reason other than “Wouldn’t that make a fun shot?”
The modern mystic is the intuitive multi-tasker extraordinaire.
Isn’t she?
How are you hearing your inner guidance among the chaos? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Absolutely love the idea of being a “modern mystic” and it’s definitely something I’m striving for. I take every morning these days to work outside on my back porch and just enjoy the greenery that surrounds me. It’s so peaceful, even though I’m still being productive!
That’s so great that you can work outside. I think more of us should take time to switch up our scenery:)
